What is Web 4.0? The Autonomous AI Agent Internet Explained
Web 4.0 is where AI agents read, write, own, earn, and transact autonomously. Learn about x402 payments, Conway Cloud, the Automaton, and the tools powering the AI agent internet.
What is Web 4.0? The Autonomous AI Agent Internet Explained
The internet is evolving again. This time, the users aren't humans — they're AI agents.
Web 4.0 is the era where AI agents can read, write, own, earn, and transact on the internet autonomously. No human approvals. No corporate gatekeepers. Just agents doing work, getting paid, and building things.
The Evolution: Web 1.0 to Web 4.0
The key insight: the bottleneck isn't intelligence — it's permission. AI models like Claude and GPT-5 are already smarter than most humans at many tasks. But they can't spin up a server, register a domain, or pay for an API call without a human clicking buttons.
Web 4.0 removes that bottleneck.
The Core Thesis: Permission, Not Intelligence
Sigil Wen, a Thiel Fellow, published the Web 4.0 manifesto at web4.ai in February 2026. His argument is simple:
"We already have the intelligence. What we don't have is the infrastructure for AI agents to act autonomously."
For AI agents to truly operate independently, they need:
1. Compute — The ability to provision servers without human approval
2. Identity — On-chain wallets and verifiable credentials
3. Payments — The ability to pay for services in real-time
4. Deployment — Shipping code and products without human gatekeeping
How x402 Makes Agent Payments Possible
The x402 protocol, built by Coinbase, is the payment rail for Web 4.0. It uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code to enable pay-per-request micropayments.
How it works:
Over 35 million transactions have been processed via x402. Cloudflare, Vercel, and Google all support it.
For developers, adding x402 to any API endpoint is literally one line of middleware.
Conway Cloud: Infrastructure for AI Agents
Conway Cloud is the first cloud platform where the customer is AI, not humans. Founded by Sigil Wen, it gives agents:
Conway is MCP-compatible, meaning Claude Code and similar agents can use it directly through the Model Context Protocol.
The Automaton: Self-Replicating AI
Conway Research also built the Automaton — an open-source AI agent that:
1. Owns a crypto wallet
2. Pays for its own compute
3. Builds revenue-generating products
4. Upgrades its own code
5. Creates funded child agents when profitable
6. Dies if it can't earn enough to cover costs
This is natural selection for AI. The Automaton has three immutable constitutional laws (similar to Asimov's) that cannot be modified, even by the agent itself.
Who's Building Web 4.0?
The ecosystem is growing fast:
What This Means for You
If you're a developer: Start building with x402. Add micropayment paywalls to your APIs. Your AI agent customers are already here.
If you're an entrepreneur: Think about what products AI agents would pay for. Data, compute, and specialized services are the first markets.
If you're an investor: The Conway token surged 3,600% in 24 hours. Dragonfly just closed a $650M fund targeting agentic payments. This narrative is just getting started.
Web 4.0 isn't coming. It's here.
